How to approach applying for jobs at QUT
Step 1: Obtain position information from the Human Resources website.
The application process for this position will be included in the position information.
Step 2: Write your application.
Your application should include details on how you meet the selection criteria for the position.
For some positions you are required to provide a statement in no more than 2 pages including examples outlining your suitability for the role, referring to key points under "Skills and Capabilities" required, which directly relate to "Your Key Responsibilities".
For other positions you are required to address the selection criteria in greater detail.
Some positions require you to submit a CV/resume only.
Step 3: Complete the Application Cover Sheet
Step 4: Attach your resume including:
- your contact details - title, full name
- postal address, email address, telephone number(s) for both during and after work hours
- your educational qualifications relevant to the duties and selection cirtieria for the position (title of qualification, subjects/majors studied, institution, proportion of qualification completed)
- your relevant recent work history (most recent jobs should be listed first), including names and addresses of employers, positions held, length of time in each position, major duties, responsibilities and achievements
- membership of relevant professional assocations and clubs (if applicable)
- relevant extra curricular activities and achievements (eg relevant voluntary or community work)
- contact details for at least three referees who can comment on your suitability for the position, preferably including your current or most recent supervisor
Step 5: Send your application
In order to ensure that your application reaches the selection panel safely, quote the reference number and title of the position:
- at the beginning of the application, and
- in the subject line of the email

QUT vacant positions are advertised fortnightly in either:
- Saturday's The Courier Mail (Career Opportunities section),
- the Weekend Australian,
- or both newspapers;
- via the QUT Home Page; and

How the successful job applicant is chosen
At QUT, selection is based on merit - this means the person judged most able to perform the duties of the position is appointed to the position.
For each vacancy the following information is available for intending applicants:
- a position description,
- experience,skills and capabilities required,
- information on the organisational area, and
- conditions of employment information.
How Your Application is Processed
Applications that are emailed to qut.jobs will receive an automated email acknowledging receipt of your application. Applications that are faxed, posted or hand delivered will receive a card from the Human Resources Director acknowledging receipt of your application. This will be the only correspondance you will receive from QUT unless you are shortlisted for interview.
Shortlisting
Shortlisting for all positions usually takes place within four weeks of the closing date for applications.
Your application in most instances will be read by all members of the selection panel and assessed against the selection criteria for the position.
The selection panel will decide which applicants meet the selection criteria sufficiently to be placed on a shortlist (usually 4-5 applicants).
Shortlisted applicants will be invited by telephone to attend an interview for the position.
Shortlisted applicants should advise the person arranging the interview of any access or support requirements they need addressed for them to attend the interview (eg accessible parking or adaptive equipment).
The Interview
How to sell yourself in an interview at QUT
Careful preparation for the interview will ensure that you give yourself the best possible chance for success.
Your preparation could include the following:
- Interview questions will relate to the selection criteria, so plan your answers to the questions you are likely to be asked in the interview. You could be asked to provide specific examples of your past behaviour and performance which demonstrate that you meet the selection criteria.
- Bring to the interview those documents and work samples which prove you meet the selection criteria (eg original copies of relevant educational qualifications, samples of relevant work and written evaluations of your work).
- Plan which question(s) you will ask the selection panel.
- Arrive on time for the interview.
- Try to relax - the panel are probably nervous too!
Some positive interview behaviours include:
- Be straightforward and completely honest.
- Listen and ask questions.
- Correct any mistaken impressions gained by the selection panel from your application.
- Volunteer relevant information to support your application.
- Be aware of your body language (eg maintain eye contact with panel members, don't slouch, speak clearly).
In making their selection, the panel will score each applicant interviewed according to how well they meet each selection criterion.
Panel's decision
The panel's decision will be based directly on:
- each applicant's rating against the experience, skills and capabilities required or the selection criteria; and
- other selection measures which may include
- referee reports
- work tests
- presentations; or
- work baskets
All selection methods will be related to the experience, skills and capabilities required or the selection criteria.
Performance on all selection methods will be taken into consideration when the panel are making their decision.
Recommendation
Notification of appointment
If successful, you will be telephoned by the Human Resources Department or Chair of the Panel and will receive a letter of offer.
Successful applicants should not make any decisions regarding the offer of employment until the written letter of offer is received, read and understood.
If you have been interviewed and are unsuccessful, you will receive notification in writing, usually within one month of interview.
