DUTY STATEMENT
Purpose of Position
The Senior Research Assistant is required to work collaboratively to investigate culturally-fair assessment practices to achieve greater equity and success for Indigenous students. The researcher will be required to design and conduct interviews in consultation with the Chief Investors (CI's), and analyse data obtained to determine the significance and relevance to the research questions.
This research is funded by the ARC Linkage grant program, and there may be a requirement for the incumbent to work outside of normal work hours on occasion to support the research project.
Organisational Relationships
The Senior Research Assistant will report to the project leader for day to day supervision, and will be required to liaise with a range of staff and stakeholders internal and external to the University on a regular basis.
Duties include:
- Design and conduct interviews, develop case studies and questionnaires in consultation with the CI’s.
- Analyse data obtained to determine its significance and relevance to the research questions.
- Determine the sequence and direction of library research.
- Supply CI’s with analysed data by setting up data files, conducting NVivo analysis and summarising results of the qualitative data.
- Draft reports resulting from field work which involves coordinating materials interpreting data and reporting on results of research including library research.
- Travel to regional areas in Queensland as required.
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- Maintain research confidentiality and conform to all requirements for the protection of intellectual property.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
- Relevant experience or training in a relevant field together with experience working with young people.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous studies (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander), including related theories or the ability to quickly gain these skills.
- Demonstrated experience with qualitative methodology.
- Knowledge and understanding of cultural interrelations with Indigenous peoples.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a team situation.
- Demonstrated written communication skills with experience in the preparation of material for publication.
- Ability to undertake intrastate travel, sometimes at short notice.
- Possession of a ‘C’ class Driver’s licence.
Desirable:
- Experience in research project management and procedures.
- Hold a current teacher registration.
- Hold a current Blue Card issued by the Commission The Commission for Children and Young People.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position has been identified by QUT as being engaged in child related employment. Appointment to this position is therefore subject to the provisions of The Commission for Children and Young People Act (2000). The appointee will be required to undergo a ‘Working with Children Check’ which will assess their suitability to work with children (defined as anyone under 18 years of age) based on his or her criminal history.
This position is fixed term and applicants must be Australian citizens or hold a temporary visa at the time of the closing date for the duration of the fixed term appointment allowing the applicant to work the required hours set out for the period of the fixed term appointment.
