DUTY STATEMENT
Purpose of Position
The appointee will perform a key role in collecting and analysing research data as well as developing and enhancing systems to present individual and group data in a user friendly, accessible format. With the upcoming roll-out of the Federal Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment framework, this position will provide an important support role for the Research Data Management Coordinator in the preparation of QUT’s cluster submission for ERA.
The Business Analyst/Software Developer will report to the Director, Office of Research and will assist in the design, development, deployment and enhancements of QUT research systems and resources, in particular the requirements of the research quality assessment process ERA and the on-going development of the Research Activity Database.
The position will also be responsible for the analysis of business requirements, preparation of project documentation, and implementation of robust systems in conjunction with the ResearchMaster Systems Support Team, Corporate Projects, QUT Corporate Reporting and other University business and operational units as required.
The position will also work with key staff within the Division of Research and Commercialisation to develop and implement e-business solutions associated with core business functions.
The Business Analyst/Software Developer will also aid in the design and deployment of Business Objects research reports for the Research Activity Database.
Duties include:
Proactively contribute to the development and maintenance of the follow;
- User/Business Requirements documentation;
- System Requirements specifications;
- Functional Design documentation;
- Testing documentation;
- User documentation;
- Configuration Management (version control); and
- Project Management reporting.
- Developing and maintaining the Research Activity Database (RAD) intranet site which provides key research data sets at an individual, cluster and corporate level. The RAD platform will be the authoritative source for QUT’s ERA submission and increasingly an important management tool in terms of research performance and capacity management.
- Perform cross system analysis to ensure data within RAD is accurate and consistent with its feeder databases eg ResearchMaster (RM) and Alesco (HR). Where necessary investigate source data errors and work with the relevant database administrators to achieve a suitable solution.
- Identify business process opportunity to improve efficiency in managing research data and, in conjunction with other areas of QUT, conduct business process re-engineering of research data related systems at QUT where appropriate.
- Design, develop, and deploy as required, load sets of research data for the QUT Data Warehouse
- Design, develop, and deploy as required research interfaces that enhance the effectiveness and useability of the ResearchMaster database.
- Analyse, design and build front-end research reports for RAD using Business Objects and develop other fit-for-purpose tools as appropriate.
- Assist the Research Data Management Coordinator with project management, problem resolution, and resource analysis as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
- Possession of postgraduate qualifications or progress toward a postgraduate degree together with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training in the areas of information technology, business/data analysis, quality/project management.
- Experience in large-scale corporate systems and the operational processes involved in the organisational areas to which these systems relate.
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualise and identify client requirements, including the design and development of solutions to address specific business requirements.
- Demstrated experience in writing and maintaining complex systems integration tools, programs and or scripts.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to prepare documentation and communicate and consult with staff at all levels.
Desirable:
- Experience with ORACLE databases
- Knowledge of QUT corporate systems, in particular research related databases such as the Research Activity Database (RAD), ResearchMaster and QCR.
- Knowledge of Information Systems Development, Quality Management, Project Management, Business Process RE-engineering, Data Warehousing theories and methodologies.
- Experience with PL/SQL in a web environment.
