This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The School
The School of Urban Development currently has 55 full-time staff and contributes to teaching, research and consultancy in the professional disciplines of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Property Economics, Quantity Surveying, Surveying, Spatial Science and Urban and Regional Planning. The School’s academic focus is on the delivery of interdisciplinary research and scholarship in integrated infrastructure development and infrastructure project management and there are strong links with major projects, through partnerships with the Brisbane Airport Corporation, Queensland Transport, the CRC for Construction Innovation and the Shell Project Academy.
All appointees are expected to have grounding in one or more of the professional disciplines. Ability to contribute in one of the Faculty’s areas of emphasis will be well regarded.
DUTY STATEMENT – ASSOCIATE LECTURER
Position Purpose
An Associate Lecturer is expected to
- teach, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level;
- be involved in the supervision/mentoring of students;
- have commenced development of, or have the capacity to develop, a research profile;
- carry out activities to develop relevant scholarly, research, application and/or professional expertise; and
- collaborate and participate in team work associated with faculty activities.
Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Head of School, and will liaise with academic and professional staff, and with students of the Faculty on a daily basis. The position is located within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Gardens Point campus.
General standard
An associate lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research, application and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline. The associate lecturer will be expected to collaborate and participate in team work associated with faculty activities.
Specific duties
Specific duties of an associate lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Limited administrative functions primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Development of subject area material with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator.
- Acting as unit coordinator for less complex units provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.
- The most complex levels of unit coordination should not be carried out by an associate lecturer.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
- Publication of research outcomes in appropriate journals.
- Preparation, in collaboration with more senior staff, of applications for research funding.
- Active participation in research mentoring programs and collaborative research teams.
- Demonstrated willingness to undertake higher degree study in an area that relates to the discipline.
- Participation in University and Faculty based activities designed to increase research capabilities.
- Critically reflect on activities such as teaching and consultancy with the aim of developing research capacity through publications or conference presentations.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Consultation with students.
- Marking and assessment primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
- An associate lecturer will not be required to teach primarily in units which are offered only at masters degree level or above.
Professional leadership
- Limited involvement in professional activity.
- Personal career development.
- An associate lecturer shall work with support and direction from academic staff classified at lecturer and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the academic gains in skill and experience.
External relations
- Be part of collaborative teams running short courses, commercial research projects or similar.

- Responsible for the health and safety of students, tutors, practical demonstrators and visitors under their control.
- Required to observe all safety procedures and protocols within their operating environment.

SELECTION CRITERIA - ASSOCIATE LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
To be appointed as an associate lecturer a candidate normally must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of four years tertiary study in the relevant discipline, for example an honours degree, an extended professional degree or a three year degree with an associated postgraduate diploma. In considering the suitability of applicants the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and/or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Evidence of demonstrated ability to undertake the following to university standard:
- prepare and present materials for undergraduate and graduate diploma level tutorials and other small group teaching including assessment;
- develop materials for lectures (including On-line teaching) which are presented as part of a unit or subject area with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator;
- supervise and mentor students working on assessment projects.
- Evidence of regular participation in administrative functions within a university or other organisation.
- Evidence of regular participation in the affairs of relevant professional bodies and community groups and/or in professional practice and/or in development of continuing education programs for the profession.
- Demonstrated commitment to participation in career development activities that are agreed with the supervisor through QUT’s performance planning and review process.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
