Faculty of Business
The Faculty of Business is QUT's largest faculty, attracting over a quarter of the university's enrolments, and is also one of the largest business faculties in Australia. Through various collaborations with industry and professional bodies, the Faculty is a key player in the business community with extensive local and international links.
The Faculty of Business has achieved international recognition with the world’s leading accrediting bodies – AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS - for the quality of its degree programs and has a philosophy of continuous quality improvement. In keeping with this the Faculty is committed to the provision of high standards of service in the delivery of its teaching, research and executive education activities. DUTY STATEMENT
Purpose of Position
The Learning and Teaching consultant will be an important part of a structured approach in the Faculty to enhancing effectiveness and quality in learning and teaching. Your expertise will form the basis for provision of high quality advice and assistance in more strategic areas of capability development at both the individual academic level, and at the Faculty/School level.
The responsibilities of this position directly support objectives and priorities set by the QUT Blueprint, as well as University and Faculty-specific strategic plans. The responsibilities of the position are in areas that contribute significantly to the reputation of the Faculty for quality teaching, and quality student learning experiences and outcomes. The position is required to work in close collaboration with all areas of the Faculty and with central areas of the University that have a role in ensuring quality outcomes in learning and teaching.
The major focus for the Learning and Teaching Consultant is to be a key source of a stream of high level, specific expertise in one or more key areas of pedagogical development and advancement, e.g. course and curriculum design/assessment/evaluation; sound course and teaching principles; as well as provide a range of specialist advisory services. Areas where Learning and Teaching Consultants may be required to develop and maintain a particular specialist expertise include:
- Teaching development for academics with teaching responsibilities.
- Educational Technology and Learning Design.
- Criterion Referenced Assessment.
- Work Integrated Learning.
- Educational Leadership.
- Sessional staff development.
Organisational Relationships
The Learning and Teaching Consultant reports to the Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) for performance planning and review and workload management purposes, and will work closely with those staff in the Teaching and Learning portfolio as well as other staff across the Faculty, particularly with Course Coordinators. No positions report to the Learning and Teaching Consultant, but the position holder may be required to project manage a team of staff from time to time.
The position is part of a complement of several learning designers, and learning and teaching consultants within the Faculty of Business Teaching and Learning portfolio. It is envisaged that these positions will form a close professional network. The position is expected to work closely on a day to day level with Faculty teaching staff.
Duties include:
- Contribute to the development of the Faculty’s Teaching and Learning agenda in the broad area of effective learning and teaching outcomes.
- Facilitate program leaders and unit coordinators to ensure that unit and program curriculum is designed to maximise quality teaching and learning outcomes.
- In consultation with the Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) and relevant academic personnel implement Assurance of Learning across the Faculty programs.
- Take responsibility for informing the development of Faculty policy in the area of curriculum design to promote excellence in learning and teaching.
- Liaise with program leaders to establish a framework for ongoing continuous improvement, including environmental scanning in pedagogical policy and practice.
- Report on activities and outcomes as required.
- Liaising between the Teaching and Learning Support Services group and the Faculty to ensure that academic and sessional teaching staff have access to resources to promote continuous improvement in learning and teaching.
- Contribute to the development of learning and teaching in the Faculty through participation in faculty and departmental committees and working parties.
- Facilitate transfer of knowledge and skills to ongoing staff in the Faculty on key aspects of design of units and teaching for effective learning, through workshops and seminars.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
- Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field together with extensive relevant experience; or extensive experience and management expertise.
- Demonstrated expertise and experience in a specific professional educational area(s) which has relevance to continuous improvement in the design and delivery of the student learning experience through for example course/curriculum design; evaluation and assessment; quality assurance; teaching excellence; professional skills development; or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective partnerships and work in teams with academic staff at all levels in the pursuit of continuous improvement in learning and teaching.
- Highly developed interpersonal, negotiation, presentation and communication skills, including the ability to establish positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality client service, and the ability to implement continuous improvement strategies within areas of responsibility.
